Discovering San Jose’s Happy Hollow Park & Zoo: A Family-Friendly Gem
Somehow, despite having lived in the San Jose area since 1984, I managed to be a grandfather before I visited Happy Hollow Park & Zoo. My wife went with our kids on numerous outings to Happy Hollow when my kids were small, but I first visited with my young grandson. Located right in the energetic heart of Silicon Valley, Happy Hollow offers a joyful escape that families and the young at heart can truly savor.

)A Rich History of Fun and Conservation
Happy Hollow first welcomed families in 1961, thanks to architect Robert Mowat’s vision for a place dedicated to curiosity and nature. The park began modestly but quickly became a beloved local institution. It hasn’t stayed rooted in the past, though. A significant renovation in 2010, costing $72 million, transformed Happy Hollow into a more modern, environmentally conscious attraction. Now, the park is known not only for fun but also for its sustainable practices, from green buildings to water conservation and habitat protection.
Park Overview
Happy Hollow is a combination zoo and amusement park. Before your arrival, consult the online schedule of events to plan your day, but double-check the large sign board as you leave the parking lot and cross the bridge to the main entrance.
Certain rides and attractions may be offline or closed at specific hours on any given day. Consider which events you want to attend and plan around them.
Happy Hollow is divided into four main areas (see online map). The zoo has two sections: the Zoo in the Hollow and the Zoo on the Hill. Most of the younger kids’ rides are in Giggle Hollow, and the older ones are in Five Point Forest. The carousel and gift shop are near the entrance. The Picnic Basket restaurant and Learning Lodge are in the center of the park, along with picnic areas.
Happy Hollow Zoo
Zoo in the Hollow
As you meander along the winding bamboo pathways of Zoo in the Hollow, you’re transported into a realm where exotic animals reside. This section emphasizes conservation and education, featuring species in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan programs.
In general, though, the animal compounds at Happy Hollow are not as large as you might find in a more modern zoo setting.
- Jaguars: One of the standout attractions, the Jaguar exhibit allows visitors to observe these majestic cats up close, highlighting the importance of preserving their natural habitats.
- Lemurs: This exhibit, home to black-and-white ruffed lemurs, offers insights into the behaviors and social structures of these endangered primates from Madagascar.
- Meerkat: Watch meerkats engage in their characteristic behaviors, from standing sentry to foraging, providing a glimpse into their cooperative societal dynamics. I admit to having a great fondness for merrkats after encountering them in the wild in Botswana.
- American Alligator: This habitat showcases American alligators, emphasizing the significance of wetland ecosystems and the role these reptiles play within them.
- Capybara: The zoo is home to the capybara, the world’s largest rodent. It charms visitors with its friendly demeanor and relaxed, pond-side lounging—think “rodents of unusual size” from The Princess Bride.
- Turkey Vulture: At Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, visitors can observe the impressive Turkey Vulture, known for its expansive wingspan and remarkable ability to glide gracefully through the air while scavenging. Kids can compare their wingspan to some of the largest birds on the planet.
Zoo on the Hill
Situated across from the Keep-Around Carousel, Zoo on the Hill, also known as Double-H Ranch, combines traditional exhibits with interactive experiences, fostering hands-on learning and engagement.
- Giant Anteater: Observe the unique feeding habits and movements of giant anteaters and gain appreciation for their specialized adaptations.
- Red Ruffed Lemur: This exhibit provides an opportunity to learn about the critical conservation efforts to protect these vibrant primates.
- Domestic Animal Barn: This area features pygmy goats, domestic chickens, and Navajo-Churro sheep. It encourages interaction, allowing visitors to brush and feed the animals,
Education Ambassadors
Beyond the exhibits, Happy Hollow’s education programs offer daily meet-and-greets and public presentations with ambassador animals. These encounters are designed to deepen the understanding of wildlife conservation and inspire proactive stewardship of natural environments.
Rides and Attractions
Happy Hollow offers an array of family-friendly rides and attractions that extend beyond its animal exhibits. These experiences cater especially to younger visitors. If you are looking for death-defying and scream-inducing rides, this is not your park.
Amusement Rides
The park features a variety of rides designed to provide fun and excitement for the whole family:
- Danny the Dragon: This iconic ride has been a centerpiece of Happy Hollow since its inception in 1961. Passengers embark on a gentle journey aboard a dragon-shaped train, weaving through whimsical landscapes and storytelling scenes.
- Pacific Fruit Express Family Roller Coaster: Inspired by the region’s rich agricultural history, this roller coaster offers mild thrills suitable for children and adults alike. Riders hop into fruit-themed carts for a series of gentle twists and turns.
- Keep-Around Carousel: This charming merry-go-round features a menagerie of creatures, including fantastical beings and representations of endangered animals, emphasizing the park’s commitment to conservation.
- Dragon Flyers: An interactive ride where children can control the height of their dragon-themed vehicle as it rotates, adding an element of personal engagement.
- Giggle Grove rides for small kids
- Granny Bugs: Perfect for the youngest visitors, this ride features adorable insect-shaped cars that gently spin, eliciting giggles and delight.
- Mini Putt-Putt: Tot-sized cars allow little ones to enjoy a driving adventure with gentle turns and a safe track.
- Kiddie Swings: A classic swing ride scaled down for younger children.
- Frog Hopper: This mild thrill ride lifts riders up and provides a series of gentle bounces, offering a taste of excitement without being overwhelming.
- Team Kids Speedway: A self-powered quadracycle racetrack that encourages kids to pedal their way to the finish line, promoting both fun and physical activity.
Interactive Play Areas
Beyond the rides, Happy Hollow offers several play zones designed to spark imagination and encourage active play:

Leaping Lemur Trail
- Leaping Lemur Trail: Adjacent to the Red Ruffed Lemur exhibit in the Zoo on the Hill, the Leaping Lemur Trail features a play zone where younger children can emulate lemur movements by leaping, hopping, and jumping. This area encourages physical activity and imaginative play, allowing kids to connect with the animals’ behaviors in a fun and engaging environment. Older kids will find the play structure in Five Point Forest more engaging.
- Redwood Lookout: Redwood Lookout is a favorite spot for older kids craving adventure and energetic fun. This 3-story tall playground encourages young visitors to climb high into the treetops, where they can enjoy sweeping views from its observation towers. The highlight for many is zooming down the park’s tallest slides, creating moments of pure excitement and joy.
- Miner’s Maze: An underground-themed maze where children can explore and discover, fostering a sense of adventure and problem-solving skills.
- Crooked House: The Crooked House is a whimsical attraction that has delighted visitors since its debut in 1976. This topsy-turvy cottage invites guests into a fantasy world where imagination can run wild.
- Story Stations: Scattered throughout the park, these stations feature animal and nature-themed books near benches, allowing families to relax and enjoy reading together, with books donated by the San José Public Library.

Gingerbread Man Puppet Show
Entertainment and Educational Programs
Happy Hollow is also home to one of California’s oldest puppet theaters. The theater offers performances ranging from classic fairy tales to original shows. The puppets and sets are crafted by in-house puppeteers, creating a unique and enchanting experience for audiences. After the performance of the Gingerbread Man we attended, the performers stayed for a question-and-answer session with the kids in the audience.
Additionally, the park hosts various educational programs and workshops, such as the “Family Fun: Family Paint” sessions, where families can engage in animal-themed art classes combined with live animal encounters.
